Een selectie grafische werken — prenten, schilderijen, tekeningen — die poppenkastvoorstellingen in Europa tonen, van de middeleeuwen tot het einde van de negentiende eeuw. Het artikel vormt het theoretische kader van een driejarig onderzoek dat meer dan driehonderd reproducties in hoge resolutie bijeenbracht en met de tekstuele bronnen vergeleek. Het vertrekt van een vaststelling: de iconografische rijkdom van deze voorstellingen staat in schril contrast met het geringe aantal studies erover. De beelden documenteren niettemin een scenische opstelling — één poppenspeler, een poppenkast op zijn maat, een kunstmatige stem, een standwerker, een staand publiek in de openbare ruimte — die door de eeuwen en over de grenzen heen opmerkelijk stabiel bleef.
