Marionnettes d'Intervention

An artistic walk tracing the story of Polichinelle

Come and discover the fascinating world of Polichinelle and his European counterparts! With our artistic walk Marionnettes d'Intervention, we invite you to explore the history of this emblematic character whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. Armed with a light booth and our puppets, we stroll through venues to offer an intimate and enriching theatre experience.

During our journey, we present reproductions of ancient illustrations, photographs and fabric samples, witnesses to the evolution of Polichinelle across centuries and countries. You will discover how this character, known as Pulcinella in Italy, Punch in England and Kasper in Germany, has adapted to different cultures while retaining his essential traits.

Our intervention unfolds in two parts. First, a short popularisation session of about 5 to 10 minutes to immerse you in the history of Polichinelle and his European variants. Then, we reveal our own characters by performing a scene from the traditional repertoire featuring Polichinelle and Thérèse, his beloved, archetype of love.

This artistic walk is the fruit of extensive fieldwork. We have gathered over 200 images and illustrations of itinerant puppeteers across Europe. This unique iconographic collection enables us to offer, alongside our intervention, an exhibition that visually traces the history of these travelling artists.

By adapting this living heritage to contemporary spaces, we aim to make this essential figure of European culture accessible to the widest possible audience. Our approach is both entertaining and instructive, offering a scholarly perspective on the evolution of a character who has crossed eras and borders.
